Chateau le Bourdillot is a domaine in the Graves district in Bordeaux, France. It is owned by Patrice Haverlan, an affable man and a great lover of oysters. He is the fourth generation winemaker at the chateau that has been in the family for a century. Bourdillot is a smallish family property, very much like many, many other estates in Bordeaux, far from the grandeur (and price levels) of the iconic crus classes, offering excellent quality drinking wines to the consumer at affordable prices.
The red wines are made from cabernet sauvignon (around 60%) and merlot. The white wine is made from sauvignon blanc and semillon grapes. The total vineyard area is around 17 hectares. The white wine is called La Tentation du Chateau le Bourdillot and there are three other labels : Chateau la Gravette des Luques, Domaines des Luques and Chateau Monet.
Patrice Haverlan has invested wisely in the property to develop the quality of his wines. Some years ago he, for example, acquired a “reverse osmosis” machine that can extract excess water from the must, a must concentration technique. It is rarely used but in very rainy years, with very diluted must it can be useful. It is a technique that is often used at the grander chateaux in Bordeaux (it is expensive) but rarely talked about.
Another curiosity is the crucifix in the winery: an old vine with root that was found in 1958 and that resembles a crucified Christ and apparently blessed by the Bishop of Rhodesia in 1959.
